Washing and Care of Cloth Diapers and Inserts
One can follow these steps to wash when using washing machine (semi/fully automatic)
- After use, remove the inserts from pockets, rinse the diaper and inserts with plain water and store in dry pail. When pooped, simple rinse the poop using sprayer or hand shower or keeping the diaper under tap and store in dry pail.
- Next , at the time of washing, rinse all the diapers and inserts together in washing machines by running and rinse and spin cycle, without using any detergent and in plain water. (Hot water should be avoided as it leads to setting of stains).
- Add appropriate amount of detergent you use and run a full wash cycle at the temperature of 30-40°C. (Wash, rinse and spin).
- Line dry. (Best if dried under Sun). Some diapers which takes time to dry like AIO’s, Fitted Diapers etc. can be line dried inside out.

- At the time of washing, rinse with plain water and soak your diapers and inserts for 10-20 minutes using detergent of your choice.
- Wash by hand, scrubbing the diaper against itself. Avoid using brush, and if needed very gentle brushing is advisable.
- For persistent stains you can make a little paste with your detergent and apply it on the stain; leave for 10-30 minutes and then wash as usual.
- Proper rinsing is very important as detergent build up can affect the absorption.
- You can dry on a line or in the dryer or on an airing rack.
- Do try to give your diapers and baby clothes as much sunshine as possible — it’s an excellent disinfectant and magical at removing stains.
Recommended detergents for better care of Cloth Diaper and Inserts:
For better care of these beauties, you can choose any detergents which are devoid of any additives, enzymes, softeners and bleaching agents, as these can hamper the absorbency of diapers and inserts. Some of the suggested brands are Rustic Art Little Laundary, Kyraa, Tide Plus (without fragrance and bleach).
- Dettol, fabric softeners or any other such liquids should be avoided while prepping or washing cloth diapers and inserts.
